Phew! What a long weekend! I thought for sure I'd have a chance to post something this weekend since John took our two oldest girls with him to Florida for a visit with his mom which left me with just the little two. But we were very busy trying not to cook or do any chores the whole weekend. Amazing how much work it takes to avoid the normal routine!
So, about the blog...
When we moved to Mississippi about three years ago, I felt deep down that the first year away from family and friends, in a new state, a new job, a whole new way of life really, was going to be dificult to survive graciously if I didn't have a plan for consistent and sustainable devotion time. I thought of reading through Proverbs each month right away. I figured it would be manageable to start reading there and stay consistent especially since one chapter in Proverbs would be pretty short! Also, I had no idea what we were doing in the south! I needed some wisdom!
My dad had read through Proverbs and Psalms every month for ages. We know this in our family because the bathroom Bible was always opened to the proverb or psalm for that day! In fact, he was reading the daily passage in Psalms the morning he went home to be with Jesus. He was always telling people just to read from those two books everyday.
Now, I'm in my fourth year of reading through Proverbs (almost) every day. I'm totally addicted to it. It is one of the most facsinating Bible books. On the surface, it can seem like just some random practical tips for living or commentary on the state of humanity (the wicked vs. the righteous) complied in a book of wisdom, but the more I read it the more I am struck by the cohesive layers of deep spiritual truths it contains! It never fails to pierce my heart or cause me to stop and ponder the truth of God's Word.
Anyway, all that to say, that I had been thinking about starting a blog for a while, but I could never think of a name for one that would encapsulate everything I wanted to say in a blog. As I was reading Proverbs last month, the ninth to be exact, I read, "Wisdom has built her house; she has hewn out her seven pillars..." (Prov. 9:1). It was totally the Lord; I knew immediately that I had found a name for my blog. (Boy, was I hoping that it would be available!)
Reading through the verse again brought to mind the beginning of Proverbs 14:1, "A wise woman builds her house..." These verses together really express where I am in life right now. I am a woman, a wife and a mother, working to create a home wherein Christ is glorified in all aspects of our life. How do I do that? How does a wise woman build a home? I finally felt like I had an answer - copy Wisdom's house plans!
What is the significance of seven pillars? I wondered. Sorry, but that will have to wait til next time! I'm off to bed!
